DIRECTIONS: From I-35, drive east on University Avenue (Hwy. 29). The street after the fifth traffic light (don't count the one on the I-35 Overpass) is East Rutersville Dr. It is directly across from a water tower. Turn left into the campus grounds. The parking lot is just ahead. A walkway to the left of the parking area will lead you to the Olin Bldg., which is the first building on the right.

Greeters on the 2nd floor will welcome you with registration material and directions.

8:30 - 8:50 - Coffee and Registration
8:50 - 9:00 - Welcome
9:00 -10:30 - Workshop of your choice - Novel or Poetry (Each will be an all-day session)
10:30-10:45 - Break with opportunity to browse speaker's books.
10:45-12:00 - Continue with workshops

12:00 - 1:00- Lunch served at SU cafeteria, or on your own (cafeteria is next to Olin Bldg.)

1:15 - 2:00 - Contest awards/networking/browsing speaker's books
2:09 - 3:30 - Continue workshops
3:30 - 3:45 - Break
3:45 - 5:00 - Concluding workshops

A full buffet lunch will be available at the SU cafeteria @ $5.50 per person. Please have exact change to pay as you enter.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

"The Novel: From Conception to Birth" — DiAnn Mills, Presenter

This workshop will take participants through the essentials in plotting a novel, including characterization, point of view, conflict, beginning, middle and end, subplots and edits. DiAnn will begin by answering questions about getting started by finding ideas, establishing a mission statement, recognizing the writer's responsibilities to readers, and getting organized. From there, she will reveal how to use our senses, bring out the message and find the perfect title. She will also show how to prepare the manuscript for publication and give marketing tips.

DiAnn Mills, of Houston, draws the broken to wholeness in her inspirational writing. She is the author of twenty-six novels and novellas, as well as nonfiction, numerous short stories, articles, devotions and has contributed to several nonfiction compilations. Three of her anthologies have appeared on the CBA best seller list. Two of her novels have won the distinction of best historical of the year by Heartsong Presents. She is a founding board member for American Christian Romance Writers, and a member of Inspirational Writer's Alive. "From Inspiration to Perspiration to Publication: Crafting a Poem" — F.J. Schaack, Presenter

F.J. Schaack will detail the poetic process from encouraging the creative spirit to the in's and out's of poetry submissions. Strategies on structure, imagery and tone will be emphasized. The use of "fresh" metaphors and title selections and sense of audience will be included. Also, how and where to submit poems for publication (with the least chance of rejection) will be addressed. Participants are encouraged to bring one poem that is in process (and not finished), of approximately 40 lines.

F.J. Schaack has published poetry and short fiction in national journals including Blue Mesa Review, the Abiko Quarterly (Japan), Santa Barbara Review, the Black Scholar, The Texas Observer and many others. He has been a teacher for 27 years and currently instruct Creative Writing, English and Theory of Knowledge at Round Rock I.S.D.'s Westwood High School. He received his PhD. from the University of Texas at Arlington. When not writing, F.J. says his six children keep him "rather and wonderfully busy."
