January 2004 MONTHLY MEETING
January 15, Thursday 7pm
The Writers’ League of Texas November Program Meeting at Barnes
and Noble Westlake:
Author
Gregory Curtis will speak at the January 15th Writers' League program
meeting at Barnes & Noble Westlake. The former editor of Texas Monthly
will discuss the in's and out's of the publishing world and answer questions
on his new book Disarmed:The Story of The Venus DeMilo (Knopf
).
“Disarmed will be a startling book for readers expecting
a dutiful art history lesson about a statue. It is instead a fiery and
eccentric story, in whose pages all sorts of unforgettable characters
fight for possession not just of the Venus de Milo herself, but of the
tranquil, eternal, maddeningly elusive ideal of human perfection she represents,”
says Stephen Harrigan, author of The Gates of the Alamo.
Born
in Corpus Christi, Texas, December 5, 1944, and raised in Kansas City,
Missouri, Curtis graduated Rice University with a BA in English, then
earned a Masters in English from San Francisco State College. After running
a small printing and publishing company in San Francisco, he became a
staff writer at Texas Monthly in 1972. By 1981 he held the position of
editor. During his editorship the magazine won many prizes including five
National Magazine Awards. In 2000 he was selected by the Columbia Journalism
Review as one of the ten best magazine editors in the country. Curtis
has been published in Texas Monthly, The New York Times, The New York
Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Fortune, and Time. Curtis lives in Austin,
is married and has three daughters and one son.
Mark your calendars for this January program meeting, it
is not one to miss! Arrive early and give Gregory Curtis a Writers’
League of Texas welcome as he takes us on a journey through the literary
adventures of his life and mind.
