University Presses Join Authors at the June 17 Monthly Meeting

Representatives from six of Texas' university presses, along with selected published authors, will discuss an overview of their publishing programs and what it is like to publish with a university press. The panel for the meeting program, to be held on Thursday, June 17, 7:30 p.m., includes these distinguished speakers:

Charles Backus is the director of TEXAS A & M UNIVERSITY PRESS. Under his leadership, the editorial interests span a range of significant fields, including agriculture, anthropology, nautical archaeology, architecture, borderland studies, Eastern Europe, economics, military history, natural history, presidential studies, veterinary medicine, and works on the history and culture of Texas and the surrounding region. Many of these fields of interest reflect outstanding departmental and programmatic strengths at Texas A&M University. Overall, the Press seeks to maintain high standards in traditional areas of academic inquiry while also exploring innovative fields of research and new forms of scholarly communication.

Steve Griffis of TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY PRESS will be joined by authors Geoff Leavenworth (ISLE OF MISFORTUNE - fiction) and Julie Lake (GALVESTON'S SUMMER OF THE STORM - juvenile fiction). TCU Press publishes nine to twelve books a year, focusing on the history and literature of Texas and the American West. The press is also interested in works dealing with border studies and Mexican history, women's studies, cultural history, literary criticism, and multicultural studies. TCU Press also publishes an extensive local history list, making a strong contribution to preserving the history and distinctive culture of Fort Worth, Texas.

Paul Ruffin, director, and author Cleatus Rattan from TEXAS REVIEW PRESS will partner to discuss their experiences in publishing Rattan's THE BORDER (poetry). The Texas Review Press is a member of the Texas A&M University Press Consortium. The Press publishes fiction, poetry, and prose non-fiction as well as a literary magazine, The Texas Review.

Noel Parsons, director of TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY PRESS, joined Tech in 2000, where he has found a new niche in publishing fiction in addition to some new nonfiction subjects. Prior to Tech, Parsons was the Texas A & M University Press acquisitions editor and editor-in-chief. He was hired at A &M in 1975 by Texas' legendary publisher, Frank Wardlow. While at A & M, Parsons sponsored books in the fields of Texarkana and Texas history, military history, natural history, and Eastern European studies among others.

Ron Chrisman, director of UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS PRESS and author Gary Lavergne (SNIPER IN THE TOWER) will share their publishing stories. The UNT Press has more than 200 titles currently in print, with special emphasis in the areas of Texana, folklore, military history, and multiculturalism. They also publish various series, including War and the Southwest, Publications of the Texas Folklore Society, Western Life, and the Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry.

Bill Bishel at UT PRESS has worked there since 1999 and acquires books in natural history, ornithology, environmental studies, geography, Texarkana, gardening and cooking. For five years, he was the book review editor of the American Historical Review, the largest academic journal of history in the world. By launching a scholarly press in 1950, the University of Texas made several important statements: books matter; books educate; and publishing good books is a public responsibility and a valuable component of the state's system of higher education. In the years since, the Press has become a publisher of international scope, issuing works in a wide range of fields.

Come for the social, with free coffee and desserts, beginning at 7 p.m. Meeting space and refreshments compliments of Barnes & Noble Westlake, 701 Capital of Texas Highway South, Austin.
