MAY 2004 MONTHLY MEETING

May's Meeting features Stephen Harrigan

May 20: One Book, One Texas author for Texas Writers' Month — Stephen Harrigan

Stephen Harrigan is a novelist, journalist and screenwriter, and was the former staff writer and senior editor at Texas Monthly. His work has been featured in The Atlantic, Outside, The New York Times Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, Audubon, Travel Holiday, Life, and Slate. His 2000 novel, The Gates of the Alamo, became a New York Times bestseller and Notable Book. It also received a number of awards, including the TCU Texas Book Award, the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the Spur Award for the best Novel of the West.

In January of 2001, Harrigan was one of five writers from around the nation chosen by Laura Bush to read at a “Salute to America’s Authors” in Washington D.C. as part of the inaugural ceremonies for President George W. Bush.

Harrigan's presentation, "One Book, One Texas, One Author," will share the background behind his literary career and successes. Discussing the author's novel, THE GATES OF THE ALAMO, Jim Yardley of the New York Times once wrote, "He visited the Alamo as a 7-year old on a family trip and left transformed. When he decided as a teenager to become a novelist, he concluded that he would write about the Alamo. Three decades intervened before he managed to take up the subject, but much to his surprise he found it largely unplowed, at least in fiction."

Don't miss this special presentation with Stephen Harrigan on Thursday, May 20, at Barnes & Noble Westlake.
