*DEADLINE FOR VIOLET CROWN AND TEDDY CHILDREN'S BOOK ENTRIES EXTENDED

Deadline for entries for the 2004 Violet Crown and Teddy Children’s Book Awards has been extended to Tuesday, June 1, 2004, since League offices will be closed on the original deadline, Memorial Day, May 31. Please postmark your package by this new date or hand-deliver to the League office, 1501 West 5th Street, Suite E-2, Austin, no later than 6 p.m. on June 1.

The Writers' League of Texas and Barnes & Noble sponsor the Thirteenth Annual Violet Crown Book Awards to honor three outstanding published books written by Writers' League of Texas members. The name of the awards comes from an O. Henry phrase describing Austin as “the City of the Violet Crown.”* The intent of the awards is to recognize, encourage and sustain talented writers. We trust O. Henry would approve.

Audiobook Award Suspended
The Violet Crown Audiobook Award has been temporarily suspended until a new sponsor can be located. The award, established in 2001, was sponsored by Earful of Books. The Austin Earful of Books stores, as well as other locations around the country, have closed. The League is researching other possible sponsors.

The Ninth Annual
Teddy Children's Book Award
sponsored by
Writers' League of Texas
and
Barnes & Noble Booksellers

Deadline: May 31, 2004
Entries are now being accepted for the 2004 Teddy Children's Book Awards.

Entries for the Seventh Annual Teddy Children's Book Award, sponsored by the Writers' League of Texas with support from Barnes & Noble Booksellers, will be accepted through May 31, 2004. Entries must have been published from June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004 and may include any children's book--fiction or nonfiction, picture book to young adult.

The award was created to honor an outstanding book for children published by a member of the Writers' League of Texas. The name, the Teddy Children's Book Award, was chosen because teddy bears, like children's books, are classic, time-honored, childhood symbols cherished by children and adults alike.
