TEXAS ASSOCIATION FOR THE GIFTED AND TALENTED (TAGT) is currently seeking nationwide book nominations for our inaugural Legacy Book™ Awards. These awards honor outstanding books that have long-term potential for positively influencing the lives of gifted children and that contribute to the understanding, well being, education, and success of students with gifts and talents. Awards, based on target audiences, will be presented in the following five categories: Children, Youth, Parents/Families, Educators and Scholars.

We want to know which books YOU think are excellent examples for gifted and talented education and worthy of the TAGT Legacy Book™ seal of approval! THE COMFORT & POWER OF STORY: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
A Cup of Comfort is an acclaimed book series compiled and edited by Colleen Sell and published by Adams Media, a Division of F+W Publications. Each volume of A Cup of Comfort is filled to the brim with inspiring true stories about the relationships and experiences that comfort, inspire, and enrich our lives. These engaging slice-of-life stories are carefully selected for inclusion in A Cup of Comfort based on originality, creativity, and substance. They are actively seeking submissions for the following anthologies: A CUP OF COMFORT FOR SISTERS, A CUP OF COMFORT FOR SPIRITUALITY, and A CUP OF COMFORT FOR MOTHERS AND SONS. SHORT SCRIPT CONTEST
Second annual short script contest deadline. Winning script will be produced for Bastrop Community Access Television (BCAT). Entry fee is $10 for first script, $5 for additional script. THE PRESERVATION FOUNDATION sponsors two nonfiction contests for 2004, general nonfiction and travel nonfiction. We have been sponsoring contests since 1997. There is no fee for entry. Information is available at our website http://www.storyhouse.org.

THE AMERICAN BOOK COOPERATIVE has launched a manuscript competition specifically targeting CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK STORIES. If you write for children, or have always wanted to, now is your chance to put that story on paper and win a fabulous prize valued at over $30,000.

As the Grand Prize winner, the author will work with an editor to get the story to the best it can be. Then the story will be illustrated, put into book form, 5,000 copies printed, a marketing plan created, and a national public relations campaign launched. AT LENGTH
Each issue of At Length consists of one novella/long story (minimum 10,000 words) and one long poem or sequence of poems (minimum 10 single-spaced pages). There is no upper limit on length. The journal is published on a quarterly basis. Submissions are only accepted electronically. Please send a Word document or Rich Text file to submissions@atlengthmag.com. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but the accompanying email should clearly note that the work is under consideration elsewhere, and immediate notification should be given if the work is no longer available. Contest No. 1. THE NOVEL or SCREENPLAY: First Fifteen pages: Any Genre, Plus one page Synopsis. Entry fee: $15 Win up to $300. You may enter any previous second, third or fourth placed winning MSS, but NOT first place winners. If you won first place in a previous contest, you may enter some other MSS than the one that won, as long as you have not sold a novel and are not published.

Contest No. 2 Short Stuff - $10 per entry - First Prize- $25
An unpublished short story. Open with a strong hook, follow with a good beginning, add a middle, end with climax and resolution. Story should have a strong plot and a hero or heroine. NO RESTRICTIONS whether you are published. No slices of life, vignettes, or personal essays. Just do it! Limit 10 pages [approximately 2500 words]. Standard manuscript format, double spaced, 25 lines to a page, courier 12 point or comparable font.

Contest No. 3 - Personal Essay - $10 per entry - First prize - $25
An unpublished article, memoir, the most unusual personality I ever met, my most embarrassing moment, my most triumphant moment, the scariest thing that ever happened to me, a devotion to a favorite person. Make us laugh! Make us cry! Make us sad! Make us joyful! Just do it! Limit 10 pages. Standard format, double-spaced. NO PUBLISHING RESTRICTIONS!

General Rules All Contests: No limit to number of entries. Leave your name off the manuscript put it only on the cover page. Previous First Place winners are excluded.

Include SASE for return of your manuscript - Furnish three copies, but only one cover page. Your name should appear only on the cover page. Novel manuscript is double spaced, but synopsis may be single spaced. Manuscript should include a header with key word from the title, the contest being entered, and page numbering, but not your name. LICHFIELD PRIZE
Deadline Apr. 30, 2004 - No entry fee. The new Lichfield Prize will award the winner with £5000. In practical terms, that means enabling a writer to pay the rent for the next five months while they are writing novel number two, or flying to Zanzibar to research the next great story. The Lichfield Prize also offers the winning author the chance to have their novel published by Timer Warner Books. For 2004, they are looking for a first, unpublished novel.

PEBBLE LAKE REVIEW
Deadline: May 31, 2004. Entries to be judged by Amanda Auchter, recent thirdrize winner in the 2003 Writer's Digest Writing Competition and staff members of PLR. WRITERS GROUP SEEKS CAT-RELATED CONTEST ENTRIES
NEW YORK --The international Cat Writers' Association (CWA) announces its 11th annual writing competition for published writers, photographers and editors in print, online and broadcast media. The CWA offers corporate-sponsored special awards of $500 to $1,300, as well as its own Muse MedallionsT to winners in 38 categories.

The competition is open to work published between June 16, 2003 and June 15, 2004. Categories cover feline-oriented magazine, newspaper, newsletter and online feature articles and columns, short stories, poetry, books, photography, video/audio tapes and more. The fee is $8.50 per entry for CWA members and $15 per entry for nonmembers. All published writers and photographers are eligible and encouraged to participate. Awards will be presented at CWA's annual conference November 19-21, 2004, in Houston, Texas, in conjunction with the Cat Fanciers' Association's International Cat Show.

Rules and entry forms will be available after April 1, 2004 from the CWA website (http://www.catwriters.org) or by sending a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope to contest chair Beth Adelman, 69 Poplar St., 2C, Brooklyn, NY 11201. The deadline for submitting entries is July 1, 2004.

NEUBY AWARD
Deadline: Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003 - WordWright.biz, Inc. and the Writers' League of Texas announce the 2004 Neuby Award to provide authors, previously unpublished with royalty houses, an opportunity to create quality and marketable work. Deadline is midnight, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003. The award program seeks a talented author with the energy, skill, and drive to successfully promote and sell his or her non-fiction book. NOBLE GENERATION II
Deadline: Dec. 31, Wednesday - Publication: May, 2004 - The Noble Generation created excitement and continues to help the Texas Department of Aging and Literacy Austin with every book sold. The next publication will be a statewide edition. Guidelines: Share your personal experiences or those of a loved one about the Great Depression, WWI, the 50s and 60s. Make the reader laugh, cry, or ponder the lives of these amazing people. Depict the triumphs and tragedies. Limit your stories or poems to 1500 words. TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION (THC)
Deadline: Dec. 31, 2003 - THC is accepting nominations for its annual T. R. Fehrenbach Book Award. The THC will award up to three $1,000 cash prizes to authors of Texas history books published in 2003. The book award encourages original research of Texas history. TEXAS INSTITUTE OF LETTERS
Deadline: January 7, 2004. The Texas Institute of Letters awards prizes each year to honor outstanding books on a Texas subject or books by authors who were born in Texas or have spent at least two consecutive years living in the state. Three awards are given in fiction: the $6,000 Jesse H. Jones Award for a novel or story collection; the $1,000 Steven Turner Award for a first book of fiction; and the $750 Brazos Bookstore Short Story Award for the best published short story.

Other awards include the $5,000 TIL Poetry Award, given for a volume of poetry; the $5,000 Car P. Collins Award, given for a book of nonfiction, for which creative nonfiction is eligible; the $1,000 Natalie Ornish Poetry Award, given for a first volume of poetry; the $1,000 John Bloom Humor Award, given for a humorous Texas book; and the $1,000 Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award, given every two years for a translation of a book into English.

GLIMMER TRAIN CONTEST
Deadline: Jan. 15, 2004 - Glimmer Train Press is now accepting submissions for the Winter Fiction Open. This contest is for all writers and open to all themes and story lengths.
